I just spilled a half gallon of paint on my new carpet!!

That is the frantic call I received today. This poor couple had not even finished unpacking from moving into their new home when the disaster happened. Thankfully they didn’t listen to the first carpet cleaning company they called who said they would come out the next day to take a look at it. This couple rightly knew that time was of the essence and their quick action likely saved them from an expensive carpet repair.

The first thing to do if this happens to you is use warm water and rags (even better a shop vac) to soak up as much of the excess paint out of the carpet as possible. The next step (and this is crucial) is to cover the paint spill with damp, dare I say wet towels. The goal here is to keep the paint from drying before you can get the professional carpet cleaner out to completely remove the stain. If the paint does dry the most cost effective solution is usually going to be to patch the carpet with some left over remnants if available. The next step is to call your trusted professional carpet cleaning company. Depending on a few factors (age of carpet, type and color of paint, etc) if all goes well the carpet cleaner will be able to use the very hot water from his truckmount and a mild detergent to remove the vast majority of the paint. In many cases there will be small amounts (usually the outline of the spill) that will need treatment with a special solvent to get the remaining color. It’s very important to use the solvent as sparingly as possible because over use can cause carpet delamination and give you a nasty ripple where the spill occurred.

After all is said and done in most cases there should be little evidence that a spill ever occurred.

Taping over wires on carpet

By · December 19, 2010 · Filed in Uncategorized · No Comments »

Do you have cords that run across your floor that could be a possible trip hazard? Are you thinking of using masking tape or worse yet duct tape to cover them? This is something I see pretty often and while it is a legitimate solution to the tripping hazard, you should be aware of another problem it could be creating for you down the road. When you move or simply move those wires and decide to pull that tape up it will leave a nasty, sticky residue. This residue is VERY difficult to remove even with powerful professional equipment and cleaning products. It’s almost impossible to remove with typical consumer cleaning products. In many cases even if it appears to be gone over the course of days or weeks you’ll see that long dark line across the room reappear. That is the stickiness of the tape continuing to attract dirt. There are a number of solutions to the cord problems that do not involve the residue issues, granted they will cost you a little more initially but in the long run it will be well worth it. I’m including a link to show some different options but you should be able to find similar products at your local home improvement store.

Restaurant carpet cleaning

I’d like to share a photo that shows the before and after contrast with one side cleaned and the other side not cleaned yet. This is an example of a horribly dirty restaurant carpet. The grease is so thick that in some areas you literally could scrape it off with a knife. In fact when cleaning it, it actually has to be removed in layers. The first cleaning removes a majority of the soil and grease and then I re-clean the entire thing to bring it to an acceptable level.

Carpet Fresh – Blessing or curse?

By · April 4, 2010 · Filed in Uncategorized · 3 Comments »

A powder that you can sprinkle on your carpet and make it smell fresh again, covering up or eliminating all those unpleasant odors from pets, spills and any thing else that gets tracked in or dumped on your carpet, sounds like a blessing to me.

The biggest issue I see with these types of products is when they are not THOROUGHLY vacuumed after about five minutes on the carpet. The sad truth is that most people DO NOT get all of the powder removed by vacuuming. This can be attributed to either a vacuum that is not functioning properly or the homeowner simply vacuuming over the area too quickly.  Another effect of this fine powder is it tends to clog the filters on your vacuum very quickly, I have even had to clean mine out multiple times just vacuuming one house. You will want to make sure your vacuum is functioning at it’s peak efficiency. As the carpet fresh gets used over and over you get a build up of this powder in the base of your carpet, sometimes to the point where it is actually visible and can make your carpet stiff. As with any other fine particulate such as dust, it will end up affecting your indoor air quality. Often after cleaning, as the carpet dries, some of the powder will wick up to the surface causing it to look like it has snowed on your carpet.

The truth is Carpet Fresh, Love My Carpet, Arm & Hammer and any other powdered carpet deodorizer I may be forgetting can all be beneficial if, keyword here “if” they are used in moderation and are thoroughly vacuumed up after about five minutes. If you are having chronic odor problems call a professional carpet cleaner in to take a look. With a thorough inspection the source can be located and you can be given multiple options to reduce or possibly eliminate the odor for good.
